History

Yuan'an Luyuan (远安鹿苑) is a yellow tea from Yuan'an county in Hubei province, named after the Luyuan (Deer Garden) Temple where it was first cultivated by Buddhist monks centuries ago. The tea grows in the misty mountains along the Yangtze River valley, benefiting from rich, mineral soils and a humid microclimate. Like many yellow teas, production declined dramatically in the 20th century, but it has been carefully maintained by a small number of producers in its home region.

Processing

Spring buds and young leaves are picked and kill-green in a wok. After shaping, the tea undergoes 'men huang' in a warm, damp environment wrapped in cloth for several hours. What makes Yuan'an Luyuan distinctive is a secondary drying and re-yellowing cycle that deepens the transformation. The result is a clean, bright yellow tea with a uniquely fresh character.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Neat, slender leaves with a yellowish-green color and subtle sheen. The liquor is a bright, clear yellow-green - lighter and more vivid than most yellow teas.

Aroma

Fresh bamboo, clean mountain air, and a gentle vegetal sweetness. The aroma is crisp and uplifting - one of the freshest-smelling yellow teas.

Taste

Clean and refreshing with notes of bamboo, fresh grass, and a gentle sweetness that lingers. Light-bodied with a crisp, almost spring-water-like clarity. Minimal processing flavors - this tea lets the terroir speak.
