History
Huoshan Huangya (Huoshan Yellow Bud) from Anhui province is one of the oldest recorded Chinese teas, mentioned in texts from the Tang dynasty. It was an imperial tribute tea for centuries. The tea nearly went extinct in the 20th century as production techniques were lost, but was revived in the 1970s by researchers who tracked down elderly tea masters who still remembered the traditional yellowing methods. Today, it remains one of the rarest yellow teas.
Processing
Young buds are pan-fired, then undergo the 'men huan' yellowing process where they're wrapped and gently heated. Huoshan's process involves multiple short yellowing sessions over several days, creating a distinctly clean, orchid-like character. The precise techniques were nearly lost and had to be reconstructed from the memories of aging tea masters.
