History
Mengding Huangya (Mengding Yellow Bud) comes from Mount Meng (Mengding Shan) in Sichuan province, one of the world's oldest tea-growing regions. Tea has been cultivated here for over 2,000 years - the legendary tea master Wu Lizhen is said to have planted the first cultivated tea trees on this mountain during the Han dynasty. Mengding tea was an imperial tribute for over 1,000 years. The yellow tea production here preserves ancient techniques that have largely been lost elsewhere.
Processing
Fresh buds are pan-fired briefly, then wrapped in paper or cloth for the 'men huan' yellowing process. The wrapping, heating, and resting cycle may be repeated multiple times over several days. The extended yellowing creates a remarkably soft, velvety cup. Mengding Huangya's processing is among the most labor-intensive of any tea.
