History
Halmari Tea Estate, located in the Dibrugarh district of upper Assam, has earned its reputation as one of the world's finest tea gardens through consistent excellence. Established in 1913, the estate gained international fame when it began sweeping major tea awards in the 2000s and 2010s - including multiple wins at the World Tea Championship and the North American Tea Championship. Halmari's 'Gold' grade - made from hand-plucked golden tips of the Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant - represents the pinnacle of Assam tea making: rich, complex, and silky smooth, completely redefining what Assam can be.
Processing
Meticulous orthodox processing with hand-plucking of only the finest two leaves and a bud. The golden tips are carefully separated and processed in small batches. Withering is extended to concentrate sweetness, rolling is gentle to preserve the golden buds, and oxidation is precisely controlled to achieve the honey-malt character without bitterness. The entire process reflects generations of expertise refined by modern quality control.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Stunning golden-tipped leaves with a high proportion of unbroken golden buds. The leaves are well-twisted and lustrous. The liquor is a deep, rich amber-gold with a honey-like sheen - distinctly different from standard Assam's reddish-brown.
Aroma
Honey, malt, and toasted grain with a sweet, almost caramelized top note. The golden tips contribute a perfumed sweetness that elevates the classic Assam aroma.
Taste
Extraordinary depth - honey-malt sweetness, caramel, and a hint of dark cocoa, with a silky-smooth texture and zero harshness. The complexity unfolds gradually, revealing new notes with each sip. The finish is long, sweet, and satisfying. This is Assam reimagined as a luxury experience.
Brewing Guide
Western Style
- Leaf: 2–3g per 200ml
- Water: 90–95°C (194–203°F)
- Time: 3–4 minutes
- Infusions: 2–3 infusions
Gongfu Style
- Leaf: 5g per 100ml
- Water: 90°C (194°F)
- Time: 30s first, +10s each
- Infusions: 4–5 infusions
Step-by-step
- Use slightly cooled water. Bring water to a boil and let it cool to 90–95°C. Unlike standard Assam, the golden tips are more delicate. Tip: Full boiling water wastes the golden tips' nuanced sweetness.
- Warm your best teaware. This tea deserves your finest pot or gaiwan. Pre-warm it with hot water. Tip: A glass teapot lets you admire the gorgeous amber-gold liquor.
- Steep with care. Add 2–3g per cup and steep for 3–4 minutes. Watch the golden tips unfurl - it's beautiful. Tip: The honey-malt sweetness peaks at about 3.5 minutes.
- Savor plain. This tea is meant to be enjoyed without milk or sugar. The natural sweetness and complexity would be masked by additions. Tip: Close your eyes for the first sip - let the complexity wash over you.
