History
Assam Golden Tips represents the pinnacle of Assam tea production - hand-selected, golden-tipped buds and young leaves from the finest gardens in the Brahmaputra Valley. While most Assam tea is processed for strength and body (and much is CTC-processed for chai), Golden Tips showcases what Assam's unique Camellia sinensis var. assamica can achieve with artisanal care. The golden buds are covered in fine downy hairs that turn golden during oxidation, giving the tea its name. Top-grade Assam is classified using the complex colonial grading system: SFTGFOP (Super Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe) - sometimes jokingly said to stand for 'Still Far Too Good For Ordinary People.'
Processing
Only the finest buds and two youngest leaves are hand-plucked during the second flush (June–July), when Assam's assamica bushes produce their most complex leaves. The leaves undergo orthodox processing: extended withering (14–18 hours), careful hand-rolling, controlled oxidation in a cool room until the golden tips develop their characteristic color, and precise firing. Every step is monitored by the estate's tea maker - this is artisan work, far removed from bulk Assam production.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Large, twisted leaves generously covered with golden and silvery tips. The abundance of golden buds is immediately visible. The liquor is a rich, warm amber-gold - lighter and more luminous than standard Assam.
Aroma
Complex and inviting - rich malt, wildflower honey, a hint of dark cocoa, and a warm, biscuity quality. Less aggressive than standard Assam, with more sweetness and finesse.
Taste
Smooth, malty, and richly sweet with prominent honey and caramel notes. The golden tips contribute sweetness and smoothness, while the mature leaves provide body. Zero harshness or excessive astringency - this is Assam with its rough edges polished away. The finish is long, sweet, and warming with a malty echo.
Brewing Guide
Western Style
- Leaf: 2–3g per 200ml
- Water: 90–95°C (194–203°F)
- Time: 3–4 minutes
- Infusions: 2–3 infusions
Gongfu Style
- Leaf: 5g per 100ml
- Water: 90°C (194°F)
- Time: 15s first, +10s each subsequent
- Infusions: 4–5 infusions
Step-by-step
- Just below boiling. Use 90–95°C water. The golden tips are more delicate than standard Assam and benefit from slightly cooler water. Tip: Full boiling water is fine for CTC Assam but will make golden tips unnecessarily bitter.
- No rinse. Brew directly - the first steep of golden tips is the most nuanced. Tip: Smell the wet leaves - the honey-malt aroma of quality Assam golden tips is unmistakable.
- Medium steep. 3–4 minutes for western style. The liquor should be amber-gold, not dark brown. Tip: Drink this tea plain to appreciate the golden tips' natural sweetness - milk masks their finesse.
- Second steep. A second infusion at the same temperature for 4–5 minutes reveals more malty depth. Tip: The second steep is often maltier and more full-bodied - a different but equally rewarding cup.

Buying Guide
What to look for
- Abundant golden tips visible throughout the dry leaf - the more gold, the more premium
- Large, well-twisted whole leaves - broken leaves indicate lower grade
- Rich amber-gold liquor, not dark brown
- Named estate origin (e.g., Mokalbari, Harmutty, Mangalam, Halmari)
Quality indicators
- The grading system indicates quality: FTGFOP1 and above are premium grades
- Second flush (summer) Assam produces the finest golden tips
- Single-estate is preferable to blended for experiencing terroir
- The tea should taste sweet and smooth without any harsh astringency
Price range: $15–30 for FTGFOP, $30–60 for SFTGFOP, $60–100+ for auction-grade premium lots
Storage: Store in airtight, opaque containers. Assam golden tips keeps well for 12–18 months. Unlike green teas, quality Assam can actually develop slightly richer notes over 6–12 months of proper storage.
Fun Facts
- The Assam tea grading acronym SFTGFOP has been humorously expanded as 'Still Far Too Good For Ordinary People' by generations of tea traders.
- Assam's tea industry was founded in the 1830s after the British discovered wild tea plants growing in the Brahmaputra Valley - Camellia sinensis var. assamica, a different species from Chinese tea.
- Premium Assam golden tips account for less than 5% of Assam's total production - the vast majority is CTC-processed for blending.
- At the Guwahati Tea Auction, the world's largest tea auction, exceptional Assam golden tips have sold for over $1,000 per kilogram.
- The golden color of the tips comes from fine trichomes (leaf hairs) that turn gold during the oxidation process - a natural indicator of young, carefully selected buds.
