History
Jin Jun Mei (金骏眉) - Golden Beautiful Eyebrow - is one of China's most prestigious and expensive black teas, created remarkably recently in 2005 by tea master Liang Junde in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province. It was developed as a premium offshoot of the centuries-old Lapsang Souchong tradition. What makes Jin Jun Mei extraordinary is that it's made entirely from tiny golden buds - it takes approximately 60,000–80,000 hand-picked buds to produce a single kilogram. The tea quickly became a sensation among Chinese tea connoisseurs and has remained one of the most sought-after (and counterfeited) teas in the world.
Processing
Only the smallest, most tender buds are picked from wild tea trees growing at high elevations in the Tongmu village area of Wuyi Mountains. The buds are carefully withered, gently rolled by hand, fully oxidized, and dried at low temperatures. Unlike its cousin Lapsang Souchong, Jin Jun Mei is not smoke-dried - instead, the focus is on preserving the natural honey sweetness of the golden buds. The entire process is done by hand by skilled craftsmen.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Tiny, tightly rolled buds covered in golden fuzz, interspersed with some darker strands - hence the 'golden eyebrow' name. The brewed liquor is a brilliant, luminous gold-amber with exceptional clarity.
Aroma
Complex and intoxicating - layers of honey, dried longan fruit, sweet potato, and a gentle floral character. The aroma alone justifies the tea's reputation.
Taste
Exquisitely sweet and smooth with no bitterness or astringency. Notes of honey, dried fruit, sweet potato, and chocolate unfold in layers. The mouthfeel is silky and the aftertaste lingers for minutes. Each infusion reveals new dimensions - floral, fruity, then gently smoky.
Brewing Guide
Western Style
- Leaf: 3g per 200ml
- Water: 90°C (194°F)
- Time: 3–4 minutes
- Infusions: 3–5 infusions
Gongfu Style
- Leaf: 5g per 100ml
- Water: 90°C (194°F)
- Time: 10s first, +5s each subsequent
- Infusions: 7–10 infusions
Step-by-step
- Use 90°C water. Slightly below boiling to preserve the delicate bud character - 90°C is ideal. Tip: Too hot can flatten the complex honey sweetness.
- Gongfu recommended. This premium tea shines with gongfu brewing - 5g in a small gaiwan, quick infusions starting at 10 seconds. Tip: Each infusion reveals new flavors - plan for 7–10 steeps.
- Savor slowly. Pay attention to the long, sweet aftertaste - 'huigan' - that can linger for minutes after each sip. Tip: This is a meditation tea. Don't rush it.
