Assam
Assam produces robust, malty black teas that form the backbone of breakfast blends and Indian masala chai worldwide.
Assam, in northeast India along the Brahmaputra River, is the world's largest tea-growing region by volume. Tea cultivation here uses Camellia sinensis var. assamica - a different botanical variety than Chinese tea, with larger leaves and bolder flavor compounds. Assam's low-altitude tropical climate, abundant rainfall, and rich alluvial soil produce robust, malty black teas with copper-red liquor and full body. Strong Assam teas form the backbone of most English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast blends and are the traditional base for Indian masala chai. Premium Assam grades include FTGFOP and SFTGFOP (golden-tipped leaves with intense malty character).
