Yixing

Culture

Definition

Unglazed clay teapots from Yixing, Jiangsu province, China, made from zisha (purple clay). The porous clay absorbs tea oils over time, seasoning the pot and gradually enhancing the flavor of teas brewed in it. Each Yixing pot is traditionally dedicated to a single tea type.

Why it matters

Yixing teapots are the gold standard for brewing pu-erh and roasted oolongs. A well-seasoned pot that's been used for decades can improve a tea noticeably. Understanding Yixing helps you appreciate why serious tea drinkers invest in and care for specific pots.
