Yanyun
Definition
The rock rhyme or mineral resonance characteristic of Wuyi yancha grown on the cliffs of the Wuyi mountains. It is a terroir-driven mineral, almost stony, sensation in the cup.
Why it matters
Yanyun, literally rock rhyme or rock charm, is the elusive but highly prized signature of authentic Wuyi rock tea. Connoisseurs describe it as a cool mineral presence, a faint stony or wet-rock note woven through the aromatics, and a particular resonance in the mouth and throat that distinguishes true yancha from oolongs of similar style grown outside the protected zone. Yanyun is widely attributed to the unique geology of the Wuyi cliffs: weathered volcanic and sedimentary rock that produces tea bushes growing in narrow rock fissures with mineral-rich, well-drained soil. The combination of terroir, traditional cultivars (Shui Xian, Rou Gui, the Si Da Ming Cong), and skilled hongbei roasting is considered essential. Like huigan and cha qi, yanyun is a sensory term that resists precise translation. Tasters often agree that they recognize it when they encounter it, while struggling to describe it in technical language.
