Hui Yuan Keng

Hui Yuan Keng is another of the legendary 'three gullies' of central Wuyi, sitting alongside Niu Lan Keng and Da Keng Kou at the top of the rock-tea hierarchy. The gully is particularly associated with old-bush Shui Xian - Lao Cong Shui Xian - whose decades-old, sometimes century-old, narcissus-cultivar plants are some of the most prized rock-tea trees in China.

Hui Yuan Keng cuts through the heart of the zheng yan zone with the same deeply shaded, mineral-rich profile that makes its sibling gullies famous. The valley floor and lower cliffs hold pockets of soil sufficient for tea cultivation, and many of the bushes growing here have been in place for several generations of farming families. Lao Cong Shui Xian - old-bush narcissus - develops a moss-like, woody depth in the cup that younger bushes from the same cultivar cannot replicate, and Hui Yuan Keng is the location most often cited as its spiritual home.

As with other named Wuyi locations, the gully is a patchwork of small holdings rather than a single estate. Processing varies by family; some lean toward heavier traditional roasting (zhong huo or zu huo), producing darker, longer-aging teas, while others have shifted toward the lighter modern roast favoured by younger Chinese consumers. The mineral 'yan yun' is the through-line regardless of roast style.
