Niu Lan Keng

Niu Lan Keng - 'Cow Pen Gully' - is one of the most prestigious micro-regions in Wuyi rock-tea country, a narrow, deeply shaded ravine inside the core zheng yan zone. Despite the humble name, teas labelled as Niu Lan Keng Rou Gui can command extraordinary prices, and the gully is one of the small handful of named locations whose tea is considered by Chinese collectors to be at the absolute top of the yancha hierarchy.

Niu Lan Keng sits between cliff walls in the central Wuyi protected area, oriented in a way that gives the bushes very little direct sun even at midday. The constant shade, the moisture lingering in the valley floor, and the particular weathering of the sandstone above are credited with producing an exceptionally strong 'yan yun' - the rock-tea mineral aftertaste that Chinese drinkers value above almost any other quality marker.

The gully is not owned by any single producer. As with most named Wuyi micro-regions, individual farming families hold rights to specific small terraces and process the leaf separately, sometimes selling under their own names and sometimes to larger Wuyi brands. The most famous tea from the area is Niu Lan Keng Rou Gui - a cassia-cultivar yancha whose cinnamon-bark spiciness is dialled into something deeper and longer-lasting by the gully's terroir. Annual production is tiny relative to demand.

The broader 'San Keng Liang Jian' classification - three gullies and two cliffs - places Niu Lan Keng alongside Hui Yuan Keng and Da Keng Kou (and Liu Xiang Jian and Wu Yuan Jian) as the historically pre-eminent yancha terroirs.
