What it's for

The wenxiang cup exists for one purpose: to concentrate aroma. Tea is poured into the tall cup first, then transferred into the squat pinming for drinking. The empty wenxiang is brought to the nose and the bouquet, now lifted by the warm cup walls, is appreciated as a separate sensory event. It is most useful for high-fragrance teas where aroma is the headline.

History

Although Chaozhou gongfu used small cups since the Qing, the wenxiang cup as a dedicated paired vessel is a Taiwanese innovation of the 1970s and 1980s. It was popularized alongside the rise of Taiwanese high-mountain oolongs whose floral fragrance benefits enormously from this aroma-first ritual. The form spread back to mainland China and is now associated with formal gongfu service.

How to use

Pour brewed tea into the wenxiang cup first. Place the pinming cup upside down over the wenxiang, then invert the pair so the tea flows from the tall cup into the wider one. Lift the empty wenxiang, cup it between palms, and inhale deeply. The fragrance shifts as the cup cools; smell it twice, once hot and once warm. Then drink from the pinming.

Buying tips

Match the wenxiang to a pinming of the same maker so they nest cleanly during the inversion step. A slightly tapered rim on the wenxiang traps aroma better than a straight cylinder. White interiors are essential for visual reading even though the cup is not the drinking vessel. Sets of six are most common.
