Why it matters

Bingdao is a village in Mengku town, Shuangjiang county, Lincang, surrounded by old-growth tea forests at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 meters elevation. The area is divided into a cluster of villages, with Bingdao Laozhai (Old Village) widely considered the heart of the appellation and the source of the most coveted gushu material. Bingdao sheng pu-erh is famous for unusual sweetness, gentle bitterness that resolves quickly into deep huigan, a thick smooth body, and a long, cool finish. The flavor profile is often described as icy sweet, reflecting both the literal meaning of bing (ice) and the cooling sensation in the throat after sipping. Like other top-tier pu-erh origins (Lao Banzhang, Yiwu, Jingmai), Bingdao has been heavily counterfeited and over-marketed. Genuine Bingdao Laozhai gushu trades for thousands of yuan per kilogram or more, and producers compete intensely for access to specific ancient trees.
