Jungpana is one of Darjeeling's most legendary muscatel producers - a small, steep, almost theatrically inaccessible estate reached by a footpath of several hundred steps from the nearest road. The garden's isolation is part of its mystique: leaf and supplies still move up and down by foot, and the resulting second-flush teas have an intensity of muscatel that consistently ranks at the top of the appellation.
The estate was named, according to local tradition, for a Gurkha porter named Jungpana who was killed nearby during a leopard hunt in the 19th century. Planted with predominantly old China-variety bushes, the garden's narrow valley sits in a sheltered microclimate that seems to encourage the jassid activity behind muscatel character. Yields are low; quality per kilo is correspondingly high.
Processing happens in a compact factory on the property, with leaf moved by hand from the surrounding slopes. Withering troughs and rolling tables are kept relatively small, allowing the factory to handle individual sections separately and bottle the most distinctive lots as standalone invoices. Jungpana's muscatel second flushes are typically deeper and more wine-like than the brighter Castleton style, with notes of dried apricot, beeswax and a long, slightly tannic finish.
The estate is now run by the Kejriwal family and is regularly cited alongside Castleton, Margaret's Hope and Makaibari among the 'classic' Darjeeling names. Its first flushes are less widely exported but well regarded, and a small portion of production is reserved for Japanese and European single-estate buyers.
