History

Tuo Cha (bowl-shaped compressed tea) has been produced since the early 20th century, originally in Xiaguan, Yunnan. The distinctive bird's-nest shape was practical - it allowed easy stacking and transport on horseback along the Ancient Tea Horse Road into Tibet. Tuo Cha is available in both sheng and shou versions, in sizes ranging from mini (about 5g, perfect for a single session) to large (250g–500g). It's one of the most accessible entry points into the world of pu-erh.

Processing

Made from standard pu-erh maocha (either sheng or shou), steamed and compressed into a distinctive bowl or nest shape. The compression is typically tighter than standard pu-erh cakes, which means tuo cha ages slightly differently - more slowly, with a more gradual transformation.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Distinctive bowl or bird's-nest shape. The liquor varies by type - sheng tuo cha produces amber tones, shou produces very dark brown.

Aroma

Varies by type: sheng tuo cha is vegetal and slightly smoky; shou is earthy, clean, and nutty with dark chocolate notes.

Taste

Clean and well-defined. Shou tuo cha offers nutty, dark chocolate, and earthy notes with a smooth, clean finish. Sheng versions are brighter and more assertive. Tuo cha often has a distinctively clean character due to the Xiaguan factory's blending tradition.

Brewing Guide

Western Style

  • Leaf: 4g (1 mini tuo) per 200ml
  • Water: 100°C (212°F)
  • Time: 15–30 seconds (gongfu style recommended)
  • Infusions: 8–12 infusions

Gongfu Style

  • Leaf: 8g per 100ml
  • Water: 100°C (212°F)
  • Time: 10s first, +5s each subsequent
  • Infusions: 10–15 infusions

Step-by-step

  1. Break or drop. Mini tuo cha can be used whole. For larger tuo, carefully break off a portion. Tip: Mini tuo cha is the most convenient pu-erh format - perfect for office or travel.
  2. Rinse. Flash-rinse with boiling water once or twice. Tip: Let the compressed tea sit in hot water for an extra moment to start loosening.
  3. Brew and repeat. Steep with boiling water, 10–15 seconds initially. Gradually increase. Tip: The tight compression means tuo cha takes a few infusions to fully open up.
