Kyoto
Kyoto prefecture, encompassing Uji, is the cultural and historical heart of Japanese tea, home to the Japanese tea ceremony.
Kyoto prefecture surrounds the historical capital of Japan and contains the Uji region, the spiritual center of Japanese tea. Kyoto is where the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) was refined into a fine art by tea masters like Sen no Rikyū in the 16th century. Today, Kyoto produces some of the most prestigious matcha and gyokuro in the world, and several centuries-old tea houses and producers still operate in and around Uji and the city of Kyoto itself.
