Yiwu Mountain

Yiwu is the most historically resonant of Yunnan's Six Famous Tea Mountains, the spiritual home of the classic vintage pu-erh cakes that defined the genre in the early and mid-20th century. As with Lao Banzhang, 'Yiwu' on a pu-erh wrapper is a geographic identifier rather than a corporate estate name - it covers a constellation of villages and old-tree forests across a wide mountain area in Mengla County.

Yiwu rose to prominence during the Qing dynasty as a major station on the southern route of the Tea Horse Road, where pressed Yunnan tea was assembled and dispatched toward Tibet and Southeast Asia. The mountain remained the dominant source of high-grade pu-erh through the late imperial and Republican periods, and the famous 'Antique Six Famous Tea Mountain' cakes pressed in Yiwu's old tea houses - Tongqing Hao, Songpin Hao, Fuyuanchang and others - are now considered the gold standard of vintage pu-erh.

In cup character, Yiwu sheng pu-erh is typically described as softer, sweeter and more aromatic than the bigger, more bitter Menghai-county teas such as Lao Banzhang. The cup tends toward stone fruit, light spice and a long honey-like aftertaste, with relatively gentle astringency. Many drinkers consider Yiwu the most 'aging-friendly' raw pu-erh terroir.

The mountain hosts a number of named villages - Mahei, Gua Feng Zhai, Bohe Tang, Yibi and others - each with its own micro-character.
