Selimbong Tea Estate

Selimbong is one of Darjeeling's longest-running fully organic estates, a quiet specialist garden in the Mirik Valley that has built its reputation less on muscatel auction lots and more on consistent, cleanly made organic black, green and white teas. It was an early convert to organic farming in the region and remains a reference for what well-managed, low-input Darjeeling cultivation can produce.

The estate sits on the steep slopes above the Mechi River on the Darjeeling-Nepal border, with cool, mist-prone weather year-round and a relatively long plucking season. Selimbong converted to organic cultivation in the 1990s - well ahead of most of its neighbours - and was among the first Darjeeling gardens to be certified by international bodies. It is part of the Tea Promoters India group, which manages several other small organic gardens in the region.

Where larger estates focus their reputation on second-flush muscatel, Selimbong is better known for its breadth: clean first flushes with green-tea-like brightness, well-made silver-tipped whites, and pan-fired green styles that draw on Chinese rather than Indian processing traditions.

Worker housing, schooling and women's cooperatives are unusually prominent at Selimbong compared to industry norms, partly a product of the TPI ownership philosophy. Combined with its long-standing organic status, this has made the estate a fixture in conversations about ethical sourcing in Darjeeling.
