Lao Banzhang Village

Elevation

Speciality
Sheng pu-erh, Old-tree pu-erh

Lao Banzhang is a Bulang-ethnic village in Menghai County whose ancient tea trees produce some of the most sought-after sheng pu-erh in the world. It is not an estate in the corporate sense - it is a small village where individual families own specific old-tree plots - but in pu-erh circles 'Lao Banzhang' functions as a single name with the same weight that a top Burgundy vineyard carries in wine.

The village sits in the hills of Bulangshan, one of the historic Six Famous Tea Mountains of Yunnan, surrounded by tea trees that range from a few decades to several hundred years old. The local Bulang community has tended these trees for generations, plucking and processing in the traditional sun-drying mao cha style that defines raw pu-erh. The result is a tea famous for an unusually assertive bitterness in youth that transforms over years and decades into a deep, sweet, layered cup - the qualities that justify Lao Banzhang's reputation and price.

Demand for genuine Lao Banzhang material has so far outstripped supply that authenticity has become the central problem of the market. The village restricts road access during plucking seasons and operates a checkpoint to control outflow, but cake-labelled 'Lao Banzhang' on the international market is widely understood to include large quantities of tea from neighbouring villages or blended sources.

Processing of the leaf follows traditional pu-erh practice: large-leaf Yunnan tea trees are plucked, briefly fried (sha qing), rolled, and sun-dried into loose mao cha, which is then either sold loose or pressed into 357g cakes for aging.
