Goomtee Tea Estate

Goomtee is a small, family-owned Darjeeling estate that has built a quietly devoted following over more than a century of continuous production. Sitting on the same Kurseong sub-division as Jungpana - and historically linked to it - Goomtee specialises in classical Darjeeling styles made from older China-variety bushes, with second flushes that show a deep, fruit-driven muscatel and a restraint that distinguishes it from louder, more clonal-driven neighbours.

Founded around the turn of the 20th century, Goomtee has been owned for several generations by the Kanoria family, who also own the nearby Jungpana estate. The property is compact, with most bushes planted on a single south-facing aspect, and the factory is small enough to handle individual section lots with care. Production volume is modest, which has helped keep quality consistent rather than scaling for commodity markets.

The estate is known among collectors for retaining a high proportion of old China-variety planting rather than replacing it with higher-yielding clonal stock. These older bushes produce less leaf but, in good years, give a cup with the layered fruit and floral complexity that defines classical Darjeeling. The 'Old Vintage Muscatel' and similar designated lots are widely cited as benchmarks.

Goomtee is part of the small cohort of Darjeeling estates that has retained both quality reputation and independent ownership through the upheavals of the past few decades - labour disputes, plantation closures, and the politicisation of the region in the 2010s. Its consistency through those years has reinforced its standing among single-estate buyers.
